Killibinbin

Introducing the new releases from Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale & the Adelaide Hills.

It’s been a big year for Killibinbin. Firstly we’ve completed the move into our new winery (in the historic Old Woollen Mill at Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills) just in time to successfully navigate our way through the challenges of the 2008 vintage. And once the wines had settled and were successfully bedded down in barrel it was time to start work on the latest round of new releases.

And here they are. Firstly, from the deep sandy soils of the McLaren Vale hills we have the 2006 Killibinbin Sandtrap Shiraz, our fastest selling wine of the last couple of years. Also from 2006 we have the latest releases from Langhorne Creek, the wonderfully drinkable 2006 Killibinbin Blend, and the quickly becoming cultish, 2006 Killibinbin Cabernet Sauvignon. Not forgetting the newbies to the Killibinbin stable from the beautiful Adelaide Hills, the 2008 Killibinbin Sauvignon Blanc and the 2005 Killibinbin “Scaredy Cat” Cabernet Malbec.

In typical Killibinbin fashion, there’s not too much of any of them, so get in quick if you want to get your hands on some. They will be available in some specialty fine wine shops throughout Australia and our export markets overseas. Email me for your nearest stockist. Or you can purchase direct from the winery. Freight is free into metro Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide for a minimum dozen order. Download an order form here.

That’s right, you read correctly....a white wine from Killibinbin after years of producing reds only. This is the first wine to be produced entirely in the new winery (the reds were all finished there), and what better way to start than with the Adelaide Hills most famous variety. Most Hills savvy’s seem to follow the tried and tested formula of tank fermentation, so for this one I tried a different approach, fermenting it in brand new, Vosges oak barrels. The result has been excellent, giving a real complex twist to the wine, whilst preserving the fresh, focussed fruit the region is famous for. Tiny amounts available only. Be real quick.

This wine is fast becoming a crowd favourite. Certainly it has developed a big reputation for over-delivering for its modest price. Very distinctive in style, loaded with lifted vibrant red berry fruit, savoury spice and hints of ironstone. Not massively structured, but no lightweight either, just dangerously drinkable. Character and style at an everyday price.

I don’t think there are too many better places to produce this style of wine than from Langhorne Creek. Both varieties excel in this region, and they combine together beautifully, creating a soft, up-front, juicy wine that is a pleasure to drink. This new wine from 2006 is bang on the money. Red and dark fruits abound. Lip smacking stuff.

The mild, maritime climate of Langhorne Creek makes it one of the best regions for cabernet in SA. The style is quite distinctive, with nuances of eucalypt and mint complementing the bright red berry fruit. This 2006 has classic cabernet structure, rich and silky smooth on the palate with firm, ripe tannins to finish. Small quantities available. This will sell out quickly.

A brand new wine for Killibinbin. Named in honour of the harvester driver who came to pick the cabernet for this wine, promptly stopping his harvester midway down the first row proclaiming it, “too steep.” The steepness of the vineyard is the key to the wine however, allowing great aspect to the sun. The long, slow ripening period and low yields of 2 tonnes to the acre result in a ripe, powerful wine with classic, cool climate attributes.
